Two Empires: A Tale of One Slave
What can I say about the real adventure that was reading Two Empires (as I'll call the work in this review)? The premise is basic and captivating: two emperors from rival states sign a peace treaty. Until one of these emperors, Levenoad, is poisoned and dies. He just doesn't expect to be reincarnated as a slave of the other emperor, Jiskar.
Get the picture? Doesn't it sound like the kind of work that's going to shake everything up? Yes, and it does! One way or another, you'll never be the same after this real test of strength.
The construction of the story is simply very well done. The characters are impressive and captivating. The plot is used well and everything here seems to lead us to a great story. It's clear that the work's biggest strengths are: the art (stunning), the characters (each emperor has more than one layer and their personalities are well developed) and, of course, the story, which seems to know where it's going.
Two Empires had everything to be an EXCELLENT WORK. HOWEVER, all of a sudden we find ourselves immersed in violence that isn't just gratuitous and unmatched, but graphic and hard to read. Torture, food deprivation, extreme weakness and several scenes of ABUSE.
There's no way to read this work without feeling at least slightly UNCOMFORTABLE. That said, the work deserves to be read (by those with a strong stomach). Since it isn't finished yet, it's hard to give a complete assessment of the work. At the end of its first season? My opinion is negative (but there's room for some improvement).
Do I recommend it? Yes, but it depends. The read itself is worthwhile, and I really think the work has several positive aspects you don't see in other yaoi. However, be warned about the difficult scenes (there's more than one) you'll have to face.
