Just when you think it’ll get better, it gets worse
Revenge
I try as hard as I can not to speak badly of any work here. I don’t like doing it, and I know every story has its audience. But there are works where you just don’t get the point. And Revenge, for me, was one of them.
The story is radioactive from beginning to end. Every time I thought “now it’s going to get better,” something worse came along. It’s not that I don’t understand the role of a sadistic character in a plot. A cruel villain can create tension, unsettle the reader and give weight to the story. The problem is when cruelty becomes the story’s only engine. That alone can’t hold a work together.
Another point: there’s a lot of hot. Really a lot. And it’s not the kind of scene that builds the relationship between the characters or deepens the story. Most of the time it only reinforces the dynamic of violence and control, which made the read even heavier for me.
I also missed some development. The characters don’t grow, the plot never really moves forward, and everything seems to revolve around suffering. There comes a point where you no longer know what the story is trying to tell.
In the end, I was left with the feeling that the shock was there for shock’s sake, with no purpose behind it. So, honestly, I don’t recommend it. If you like darker works, there are others that handle this kind of theme with much more care.
